Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a beautiful 1940’s era Shure Brothers 556 model (1st generation) dynamic cardioid microphone often referred to as the “Fatboy” made famous by several musicians including a young Elvis Presley himself. Classic, clean deco lines give this mic the attention it deserves. Made in Chicago, Illinoise. This 55 series mic made it’s debut in 1939 and had a run of 11 years until the second generation of smaller 55 S mics came along in 1951. A cast zinc body with a glossy satin chrome finish. This 556 was introduced around the mid 1940’s and was a bit more expensive due to it’s practical built in lower shock mount to reduce vibrations and unwanted feedback while live. It comes with the desk stand shown. Pic # 2 shows an old World War II era Shure catalog showing this very model and all of it’s characteristics and price. Pic # 3 shows a young Elvis using this model as well. You just rarely see these harder to find 556 model mics around and very rarely this nice physically speaking. That being said this mic has been tested and while it’s 100% complete the mic no longer works. The dynamic cardioid element is non-working. The regular 55 model had the adjustable impedance switch while the 55A, 55B and 55C. This 556 has the impedance switch as well. Again, mic is currently non-working. This example is in the top 10% from what I have seen over the years. The lower shock mount has the standard 5/8 X 27 thread so you can screw this onto any desk or floor stand you have and will make a fantastic display piece anywhere in the home, office or studio. A really nice example of one of the most famous and beautiful mics ever developed. She’s quite large as well making it stand out from most of the smaller boring mics of today. A nice early 55 is getting hard to find. This particular 556 has extremely lite wear and far above average compared to most 55 Fatboys you’ll come across on Ebay. The ribs are free of any fractures or dents. Both the front and rear black silk screens look very nice with zero discoloration or holes. The satin chrome finish has an incredible luster. There is just a few fine scratches and has zero pitting on the head of the mic. Zero dents, nicks or engravings. The Shure badge shows no wear and completely legible. The shock mount gives the mic a more aggressive look than the standard 55. The shock mount works like new. It does have the most subtle lean to it but the resistance is very firm. The mic has a built in short cable that I shortened for cosmetic reasons. It’s just 7 inches long. It’s soft, pliable and has an older Cannon female XLR connector. Cable is wired correctly in case you plan on replacing the inner element with something that works. This 556 still has the original front and rear grills. No mix matching on my mics. This mic is an easy 8 + on a scale of 1 – 10. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE… The desk stand is a period Turner model called the C-3 and has an aluminum base with a satin chrome finish that lames a very stable platform for the Shure 556 and compliments the mic nicely. It was sold during the early 1950’s and had a modern sleek design. The stand has a low center of gravity and has very little wear. Just the smallest amount of pitting on the surface of the base but overall very nice and has the original rubber pad on the bottom. It has a short 3 inch chrome riser that looks very nice. The mic on top of the stand is appx 11 1/2 inches tall X 5 inches wide. This is going to make a very nice accent piece anywhere it’s displayed and will draw plenty of attention. And as always… I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not…I have a no hassle return policy.
