The Pre-Astronauts: Manned Ballooning on the Threshold of Space by Craig Ryan SIGNED by the author. 1st edition, 2nd printing, 1995. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It tells the generally neglected story of the US Air Force (mostly) pioneering sending humans into space in the 1940’s and 1950’s before NASA was created. What these people did was amazing and dangerous, something the current NASA could never do due to their fear of failure and safety culture. The Air Force believed they would be the ones to launch humans into orbit and to the moon, but that glory went to NASA in the 1960’s. If you are looking for a book that makes you amazed and happy to own every time you see it on your shelf, why not get signed copy? Or, this would make a unique and thoughtful gift to someone with a special interest in exploring space. From the jacket: In the 1950s and early 1960s a small fraternity of daring, brilliant men made the first exploratory trips into the upper stratosphere, reaching the edge of outer space in tiny capsules suspended beneath plastic balloons. This book tells the story of these tenacious men as they laboured on the cusp of a new age, seeing things that no one had ever seen and experiencing conditions no one was sure they could survive. Mostly U.S. Air Force and Navy officers, among them doctors, physicists, meteorologists, engineers, astronomers, and test pilots, they struggled with meagre budgets, bureaucratic politics, and one another. It is a thrilling story of tremendous personal sacrifice and great risk for the promise of adventure and the opportunity to uncover a few precious aspects of the universe. Capt. Joseph Kittinger, for example, rode a balloon up to 103,000 feet in an open gondola and then stepped out and freefell to Earth, becoming the only person to break the sound barrier without a vehicle. Lt. Col. David Simons stayed aloft for a full day and night in a primitive pressurized capsule to become one of the first to see the curvature of the planet. In this work, Craig Ryan masterfully captures the drama of their spectacular achievements and those of many of the other space pioneers who made America’s stratospheric balloon programs possible. Book is in Very Good condition with very little wear or shelf wear, and looks like it may be unread, however, it has been stored on a shelf for almost 30 years so there are some faint scuff marks on the dust jacket and the cover edges have slight sun fading. Otherwise, covers and pages are square, clean, bright and unmarked, except for the author’s signature on the half title page. Please see pictures as they are considered part of the condition description.
