Adorable antique lithograph print entitled ‘Love Is Blind’ featuring a study of a young girl tenderly embracing her broken doll by the American artist and illustrator Bessie Pease Gutmann. The artist produced two works with this same title, this one appears to be the rarer of the two ~ perhaps because the rendition of the damaged doll with its open head and missing leg and hand was considered a touch too macabre for this particular style of art at the time and didn’t sell as well, the other version isn’t as unusual as this one, in my own humble opinion this is the more interesting of the two studies. The print itself measures H30cm x W25cm and is framed in a complementary modern frame measuring H34cm x W29cm featuring marbled tortoiseshell effect main middle frame with black outer and inner edging, with the outer edge featuring gold beading. It’s worth noting that the copyright dating this work at 1903 makes it one of the earliest pieces Bessie produced after being employed by Gutmann & Gutmann that same year, just two years after completing her art studies at the two art institutes noted below. A little information on the artist, courtesy of Wikipedia: Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876 1960) was an American artist and illustrator, most noted for her paintings of putti, infants, and young children. During the early 1900s she was one of the better-known magazine and book illustrators in the United States. Her artwork was featured on 22 magazine covers such as Woman’s Home Companion and McCall’s between 1906 and 1920. She also illustrated popular children’s books including a notable 1907 edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. After graduating from high school, she studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. From 1896 to 1898, she attended the New York School of Art (later Parsons, The New School), and attended Art Students League of New York from 1899 to 1901. Gutmann initially worked as an independent commercial artist drawing portraits and newspapers advertisements. In 1903, she gained employment with the publishing firm of Gutmann & Gutmann which specialized in fine art prints. In 1906 Gutmann married Hellmuth Gutmann, one of the brothers who co-owned the publishing firm where she was employed. The couple moved to South Orange, New Jersey (378 West End Road) in 1909. Thereafter, they had three children, Alice, Lucille, and John, who became the models for her illustrations. She died on September 29, 1960, in Centerport, New York, at the age of 84.
