Alfred Meakin Set of 6 Salad Plates Center Floral Basket Gold Embossed 1874-1897 Elegant Decorative SET of 6 SALAD PLATES 7 7/8″ from ALFORD MEAKIN Tunstall, England, Heavily EMBOSSED WIDE Rim with Center FLORAL BASKET, circa 1874-1897 DESCRIPTION: This beautiful set of 6 salad plates has the smooth rims with a beautiful, wide , heavily embossed band next to the rim. The delicate basket in the center medallion consists of brightly colored flowers, fruits with green & blue leaves on soft white with gold. There is a wide gold band just above the verge to add to its allure. This is a beautiful set! CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is excellent, particularly for a set that is at least 125 years old and could be even older. You have a full frontal photo of each of the 6 plates. The only issues are two small back rim flakes on plates #5 & #6. See photos #7 through #10. Look at photo #6 to see a tiny nick in the gold on the outer rim of plate #4. We find no other nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, other flakes or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the colors and no crazing. Look in the photos to see this. The lack of utensil scratches on the set attests to the high quality of the bone china. DIMENSIONS: The salad plates have a diameter of 7 7/8″ and a height of 5/8″. HISTORY/MARKS: Alfred Meakin, youngest son of James Meakin, started the earthenware manufacturer at the Royal Albert Works in Tunstall, England in 1874 trading as Alfred Meakin. By 1897, he traded as Alfred Meakin, Ltd. and he died in 1904 to be succeeded by his son, Alfred James Meakin, who lived only 4 additional years. The business was acquired in 1908 by Robert Johnson, Meakin’s uncle and one of the 4 brothers of Johnson Bros. Tunstall was added to name after 1913 and the business is still operating today as Churchill Group having undergone several ownership and name changes in the meanwhile. .
